Hall Cabinet

A coup for Reception Desk World a Studio Job posting designed by Job & Nynke thanks to their communications person , Maarten , who sent us the photos and text. Enough said, here in their words :
25 KV project 2000, location 25 KV Building Rotterdam
The former energy plant 25 KV has a sober but functional character. The building elements are standardised but the way of project development and architecture result in conceptual and ambitious solutions. The enormous glass facade seems to be in constant motion by the building inhabitants.
Except of the glass front and galvanised construction, the entrance (ca 120m2) is completely coated with shiny grey casted epoxy ( Ral 7035)
In order to create a contrast with the clean environment I designed two pieces of furniture which claim the opposite of what the architecture leads to suspect. The aim is that the furniture do not seem to be standardised but 'extreme unique' by the way of design, choice of material and realisation.
There is a lyrical (control panel/machine) relationship between the two pieces of furniture. They seem to be useless objects which have been positioned coincidentally but are full of functions for the visitors and inhabitants.
Hall Cabinet
Material: Steel frame, multi plywood, glossy PU coating.
Dimension: 390x460x210 cm.
This 'could be' flying machine stands parked in the big hall of the building. In contrast with the constructive, newly built 25kv building the cabinet has a deconstructive and asymmetrical character by means of the long table with a free span on which the ponderous body rests ( ca. 1000 kg). The cabinet is 'closed' but contains more than 50 doors and two big lids behind which a functional workspace and 'chair storage' are hidden. While the communication Unit has archetypical form characteristics, the cabinet is 'extreme unique' because it denies all influences of a generation of designers who grew up in the period with the authentic 'My first Sony' and Playmobil. Finally the cabinet has been finished with a high glossy coating with 'classic' colours so that the viewer can be surprised to see that the cabinet seems to be a big piano after all.
The mail box has a anti-hooligan system consisting out of two built-in speakers which produce the sound of 'continuous human humming'.
