Warts and all

Not only is it exciting to find such an original reception desk but a bonus to discover it in less than typical parts of the world and in this case the halo of Britain, the Shetland islands.
Made from 2 tons of salvaged keel and stern-post from a wrecked ship dredged up from the old Hays dock in Lerwick. We like the contrast of modern engineered components against the rusticity of the iron bolt encrusted timber, that is as strong as iron itself. The desk was created by maverick maker Stuart Hill (you can see his initials embossed into the oak end grain) for the Shetland Museum and Archives , a 2007 building designed by the major interdisciplinary design practice BDP.
A hearty thanks to Mark Sinclair photographer for sending us a phat album full of images. View his website Phatsheep for many scenes of stunning Shetland splendor.
