Furniture fantasia

Barcelona based architectural duo Raich Del Rio try to break a record with this linear swath of reception desk meterage. The vein like piece of furniture is housed in the heart of the Ave Marie Pavilion, a former hospital, in Barcelona lacquered in 3 hues of red. Dezeen first flashed up to us the stop sign for this posting.

400,000,000,000

From Billund -a real designers project , the Lego Group Development Department interior scheme, by Bosch and Fjord. They created something with fun in mind, fresh and inventive . Forms from Lego of the logo rather than Lego of the brick. We particularly like the dumbo ear worktops winging out from either side of the reception desk. How many millions of young minds have built up to being adults creatively influenced by these little pieces of plastic?
This interior Lego land scape came into the reception area via Branding/advertising/design/web people ,Betley Whitehorn's ,blog.

To a tee

From the capital of New England ,and the old centre of Boston, a thoroughly contemporary reception desk for the modern media company Digitas.
Curved plated facets snake around the curved base structure which feigns scale like protection of some ponderous exoskeleton. Yet we find it on the whole sculpturally inviting . KlingStubbins do the biz for design.

Warts and all

Not only is it exciting to find such an original reception desk but a bonus to discover it in less than typical parts of the world and in this case the halo of Britain, the Shetland islands.
Made from 2 tons of salvaged keel and stern-post from a wrecked ship dredged up from the old Hays dock in Lerwick. We like the contrast of modern engineered components against the rusticity of the iron bolt encrusted timber, that is as strong as iron itself. The desk was created by maverick maker Stuart Hill (you can see his initials embossed into the oak end grain) for the Shetland Museum and Archives , a 2007 building designed by the major interdisciplinary design practice BDP.
A hearty thanks to Mark Sinclair photographer for sending us a phat album full of images. View his website Phatsheep for many scenes of stunning Shetland splendor.

Carbon footprint

A real pulcher of a reception desk from the duo Tintab cabinet makers and Rolfe Judd architects creating glamour for the front face of the unglamourous coal industry. The curved modesty panels are burr walnut capped with cast aluminium and glass resulting in a reception desk formed from a sack load of skills with aplomb.

Groove armada

The second exceptional reception desk from cabinet makers TinTab and a great lesson in simplicity and quality. Constructed in solid oak and triply with groove cuts that cover a large percentage of the surface area that take away so much material and yet give so much back to this piece, here housed in Spaniards Park.
From award winning London architects Morrow & Lorraine. Click on to their website for more from these great detailists. See the project in full and further 'flair' from these designers.

What ain't no country

This graphic comic of a reception desk was by the unique makers ' Tin Tab' of Newhaven. We are so front of house excited by their work that we are going to dedicate the next few postings to their stuff.
Simple facets of backpainted glass sliced through with crisp playful stainless steel work.
The project is in London village and so are its designers, just down from The Oval ,the long established Rolfe Judd architects .

Beyond the fold

Germany scores again and in the city of Berlin too. Almost all exterior faces of this reception desk island unit have been given the the Solid surface treatment by the architect Iris Steinbeck for property company Orco. The illusion -An exercise in solid surface origami with an uninterrupted thick pliable slab of cool white sculpting itself around a core of opaque glass. The plinth illumination nicely pushes the piece of furniture from just being dead weight static, the receptionists really are in the driving seat. Coolboom cover it in detail.
