Urban Spaceman

It has been a while since we first wanted to feature the work of Dutch Architect/ Artist Frank Havermans. This image, including the reception desk,is only a snippet of one of his inspiring installations , KAPKAR/ SE-D2E, which for us has a certain 'retro' feel, craft on a giant scale, but all his projects have a depth, all visually intriguing, wryly subverting our preconceptions of what we expect from a space and the elements within. Thanks to Karin van Pinxteren , Photographer Rene de Wit ( and his sumptuous work) and of course Frank H for the use of the image, so now go and buy the book.

Hawaii Four-0

Reception desks make statements. They confirm a clients sense of arrival and give direction. So when Philpotts Interiors Marion Philpotts -Miller was faced with creating one for the firms new Honolulu headquarters, 40 South School Street, she pulled out all the stops.Custom built, the desk sits on a floor of dark Basalt tiles that contrast with its white oak body and roughly chiseled surface. " We wanted a generous work space for the receptionist and knew it had to be more than a simple desk", says Philpotts-Miller." We consulted with our staff and came up with a Basalt countertop and an oak body to give texture and warmth. Making things function beautifully is what we do".

The Cupressaceae family

A tantalising group of photos from the portfolio of George Papadopoulos Architect, scenographer and everything in between present this reception desk at a distance yet the echo of its detail are clearly heard in the resonance of this space. 'Cyprus' Pine abounds from the human scale of the reception desk to the cavernous roof canopy . The interior is designed for dual occupancy of Orthodontic practice and design studio which is a delicate brief undertaken with serious intent yet with a playful inviting confidence. View George's company, Skinotechniki website for more from this multidisciplinary.

Marbleous Melbourne

We  enjoyed the Contemporists cover of another project by these architects , for The Yas Island Yacht Club albeit without any reception desk,so much that we felt compelled to include an image of one from another of their projects.
Australian designers Omiris One Architecture, also with offices in the U.A.E, are responsible for the book matched marble work detail and all else in this interior.

Mini opera

We may appear shallow as a puddle when we come across such an original reception desk design but then, hey, how could you not resist such a concept like this. The project is the 'Alla Scala concept fashion store' in Shen Zhen, China by  the Italian OObiq Architects who produced the sparkle and plusMood the spiel.

She sells, sea shells..

Once again, another exquisite design from the partnership of Jonathan Staub of Philpotts & Associates and Charles de Lisle. The reception desk at the Shorebreak Hotel, a Joie de Vivre property located in Surf City USA, brings hip and modern flair to the boutique hotel. The spacious lobby includes a wetsuit wall, kelp mural, digital art of local surfers and wonderfully crafted reception desk tie together the cultural elements encompassing the community.
Custom resin panels of embedded ice plant imagery at the front of desk and nautical rope wall behind, provides a strong focal point as guests enter the lobby. The Caesarstone Quartz countertop conveys cool clean lines, which compliments the warmth of the Ipe wood desk return.

Silver Service

The true artisan reception desk- beautifully carved , honed to perfection and elegantly proportioned. A very assured design and execution for The Charles Hotel ,in the Old Bavarian centre of Munich. It has an almost 'Pharaohian' quality but then it is a Rocco Forte Hotel, timeless and built to last.

California Dream Inn

This posting may go into our top ten, a reception desk with a truly original frontage within a renovation project by San Francisco/Honolulu based Interior designers .
The story : 'Inspired by 1960's and 70's craft artists, the elongated reception desk at the newly renovated Dream Inn Hotel speaks to the local Santa Cruz culture. Typically approached as a flat surface, this desk provides depth with varied shaped, hand-stained wood blocks. The wood stands in contrast to the bright, multi-colored carpet, orange laminate top, with back-lit corrugated panels behind. Jonathan Staub of Philpotts & Associates teamed up with local designer Charles de Lisle to complete the hippie couture boutique Joie de Vivre hotel.' More designs to follow from these creatives.
